A floating shelf works precisely because you cannot see what is holding it up. The bracket sits inside the shelf and screws to the wall behind it, so from the front there is a plank apparently growing out of the plaster.
Solid wood rather than veneered MDF, which matters most at the front edge — that is where a veneered shelf chips first and never looks right again. Two per pack, so you can run them as a pair.
